The LASIK eye surgery procedure is very brief, but what about a recovery period? Most patients only experience mild, short-term discomfort after laser eye surgery. The recovery time is really just about monitoring your eye health to make sure you get the best possible results! You’ll have several follow-up appointments with Dr. Kelly after your procedure to monitor the healing process.
Here’s exactly what to expect during your LASIK recovery:
LASIK Procedure Day
Your recovery starts right after your procedure is complete. Make sure you arrange a ride home after the surgery! Dr. Kelly will prescribe medicated eye drops to promote healing and minimize discomfort. You may experience sensitivity to light the first day, which is very common but typically goes away very quickly.
24 Hours After LASIK
Your vision will be foggy right after the procedure, similar to opening your eyes under water. You should be able to see much clearer a few hours after the procedure. Once the topical anesthesia wears off, you may likely have slight discomfort after surgery. An itching or burning sensation is typical and Dr. Kelly will give you instructions on pain relief. Once you are home, rest your eyes for 3-5 hours. Dr. Kelly also recommends avoiding strenuous eye activity for at least 24 hours. You can go back to your normal routine the next day but make sure to protect your eyes in bed at night with eye shields.
Dr. Kelly will schedule your first follow-up appointment within 24 to 48 hours after your LASIK eye surgery. You will perform some basic vision tests and Dr. Kelly will check on your healing and you can discuss any questions you have. It is recommended that you wear sunglasses when outdoors in the days and weeks after your procedure for comfort and protection. Most patients are able to read and watch television after 48 hours, but Dr. Kelly will advise you at your post LASIK appointment.
1 Week After LASIK
Your vision should begin to stabilize every day after your LASIK procedure. Minor fluctuations are normal and should be expected as you heal. It’s important to continue using the prescribed eye drops you were given even while your healing as progressed.
1 Month After LASIK
Your one-month (or three week) follow up is the time to discuss getting back to your favorite sports or the gym with Dr. Kelly. You may experience some minor sensitivity at this point but it will be tapering off.
3 – 6 Months After LASIK
After three to six months, you should be noticing a significant correction to your vision and its stability. Even though you will likely be healing well at this point, it’s important to attend follow-up appointments with Dr. Kelly and follow his after-care instructions. Most patients have very few, if any, activity restrictions by now.
Recovery after LASIK typically is consistent, but every patient heals at their own pace. Dr. Kelly wants you to get the best results possible and knows how to get you to reach that goal. Contact our office if you have any questions on after-care.
