In the last decade or so, there have been rapid technological advancements in the field of cataract surgery. Modern cataract surgery involves the highly controlled use of a laser to dissolve the cataract. This means that the opening made within the eye is tiny, the procedure can be done much more quickly, and patients are much more comfortable during the surgery. In addition, recovery is very quick. Laser cataract surgery is one of Dr. James Kelly’s primary services, so you can be certain that you’re in excellent hands. About Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the lenses in the eye, which can make it difficult to see. This condition usually develops with age and can cause blurry vision, glare, and haloing — which can be dangerous, especially when driving at nighttime. Many individuals’ activities such as knitting, watching TV and movies, reading, and golfing are greatly affected by cataracts.

The lens of the eye is a transparent structure that focuses light waves on an adjacent layer of cells so that the vision is clear. Cataracts form as small, usually invisible crystals inside and behind the lens. These crystals cause your natural lens to lose transparency and become fragile. They may also damage the eye’s other cells and tissues, which could lead to more serious vision problems.

What is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is extremely common, with more than three million patients undergoing it each year. It is a convenient outpatient procedure that only takes 10-15 minutes for the actual surgery. The purpose of cataract surgery is to remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

In the past, cataract surgeons would remove the clouded lens by creating tiny incisions within the eye using a surgical knife. However, now with modern technology advancements, cataract surgery is much less invasive, with only a small hole being made using a laser. What to Expect from Laser Cataract Surgery

You will need to use special eyedrops for three days before your laser cataract surgery. On the day of the procedure, we will provide you with medicine to relax you. After you’ve been brought to the Laser Suite, we will administer anesthetic eyedrops and the surgery will begin. As a top cataract surgeon with many procedures accomplished, Dr. Kelly will ensure that you are comfortable during the surgery. He will talk to you and help you relax. Anesthesia is also available, although most patients don’t need it. After 10-15 minutes, the laser cataract surgery procedure is done. An eyepatch will be placed on your eye, and you will be taken to a post-op area, where you will be given a snack and a drink. Many patients notice improved vision even minutes after the surgery. You will have a follow-up with us the following day so that we can ensure that everything looks good.
