What is VisuMax 800 SMILE?

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is already one of the most advanced laser vision correction procedures available. Kelly Vision is one of the few vision centers in the Northeast pioneering SMILE technology, allowing us to fully customize your procedure for best-in-class results. With SMILE:

  • You can achieve clear, corrected vision
  • The procedure is minimally invasive, bladeless, and gentle
  • Most patients report little to no pain
  • You can typically return to your normal routine the very next day
  • There’s generally less discomfort and dryness compared to other vision correction procedures

The next-level VisuMax 800 system takes SMILE to new heights with SMILE Pro. This newer approach delivers faster treatment times, enhanced accuracy, and a more compact design for an overall improved patient experience.

  • Although SMILE pro is the headline procedure of the VisuMax 800, this technology can also perform:
  • ICR (Intracorneal Ring Segments): A versatile option for treating certain corneal conditions or irregularities.
  • LASIK Flaps: Once FDA approves the VisuMax 800’s high-speed flap creation, the LASIK process will be further streamlined with unmatched precision.

Will I Need Reading Glasses in the Future?

Is SMILE Pro Painful?

How Does SMILE Compare to PRK?

Am I Too Old or Too Young for SMILE with the VisuMax 800?

There isn’t a strict age cutoff for SMILE, but most candidates are over 18 and have a stable prescription for at least a year. Older adults can also benefit, provided their eyes are healthy.

How Soon Can I Resume Normal Activities After SMILE Pro?

Many patients can return to normal activities—such as work, light exercise, and routine errands—the next day. However, we recommend avoiding strenuous activities, swimming, or contact sports for at least a week or as directed by Dr. Kelly. This ensures optimal healing and the best possible outcome.

What If My Corneas Are Thinner Than Average?

SMILE is often an excellent option for patients with thinner corneas because it does not involve creating a large flap, as in LASIK. However, every situation is unique. During the consultation, Dr. Kelly will measure your corneas to see if you’re a suitable candidate or if another procedure would be more appropriate.

Will I Need Reading Glasses in the Future?

SMILE corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism but doesn’t stop natural age-related changes such as presbyopia (typically starting in your 40s). You may still need reading glasses later in life for close-up work.

Is SMILE Pro Painful?

Patients often report minimal to no pain during SMILE. Numbing drops keep you comfortable, and the VisuMax 800’s streamlined design further reduces discomfort and anxiety. Afterward, you may experience mild irritation or dryness, but this usually subsides within a day or two.

Can I Drive Myself Home After the Procedure?

You must arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home, as your vision may be blurry or sensitive to light immediately after SMILE.

How Does SMILE Compare to PRK?

Both SMILE and PRK are bladeless and effective for correcting nearsightedness (and, in the case of SMILE, astigmatism). However, PRK involves removing the top layer of the cornea and requires a longer healing period. SMILE is less invasive, typically involves a faster recovery, and patients often return to normal activities more quickly.
